shirovasthi

Shirovasthi is a therapeutic Ayurvedic treatment that focuses on the head and is specifically designed to address disorders and imbalances related to the head, neck, and nervous system. It involves creating a reservoir or cap-like structure on the head and filling it with warm, medicated oil.

During a shirovasthi session, the recipient sits comfortably or lies down while the therapist constructs a cylindrical cap made of leather or cloth and places it on the head. The cap is then sealed to prevent oil leakage, and warm herbal oil is poured into it. The oil is allowed to remain for a specific duration, typically ranging from 20 to 45 minutes.

The warm oil used in shirovasthi is selected based on the individual’s dosha and specific needs. The oil’s properties and the warmth help nourish the scalp, improve blood circulation, calm the nervous system, and promote overall relaxation.

Shirovasthi is commonly used to address conditions such as headaches, migraines, insomnia, stress, anxiety, and certain neurological disorders. The continuous flow of warm oil and its therapeutic properties provide deep relaxation, relieve tension, and rejuvenate the mind and body.

After the therapy, it is recommended to rest for a short period to allow the oil to work effectively. The oil is then gently removed, and the head may be given a gentle massage to further enhance its benefits.

It is crucial to receive shirovasthi from a trained and experienced Ayurvedic therapist who understands the correct application of the cap, selection of appropriate oils, and safety precautions. As with any Ayurvedic treatment, it is advisable to consult with a qualified practitioner or healthcare professional before undergoing shirovasthi, particularly if you have specific medical conditions or concerns.
